O KIDNEYS! MY KIDNEYS!

kidneykidney

Only over the past couple of weeks have I come to fully appreciate the miraculous engineering of our bodies, in particular, the kidneys.  When healthy, these two compact organs can cleanse our blood and regulate our electrolytes and hormones more effectively and efficiently than a machine the size of a dishwasher.  Blessed are the amazing kidneys, for they shall inspire new psalms!  Or perhaps just a parody of an old one:

PSALM OF THE KIDNEYS

23 O kidneys, thou art my filters; I shall not grow toxic.

2 Thou maketh urine from waste products and excess water: thou leadeth sodium and potassium in or out across thy membranes and maintain their levels with constancy.

3 Thou restoreth my pH balance: thou dost beget and regulate hormones for the sake of my blood pressure, bone density, and red blood cell production.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art within me; thy nephrons and thy glomeruli, they cleanse me.

5 Thou workest around the clock to purge mine enemies: thou dost purify the whole of my blood five and twenty times daily; my bladder runneth over.

6 Surely these sacred organs shall serve me all the days of my life: or
I will dwell in the chair of the dialysis center for ever and ever.

I have 2 1/2 kidneys, an extra half on one side. I’m hoping it’s helping compensate for the Cosmopolitans.

How lucky is that! Like having six fingers on your right hand?
