IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial beginning of summer.  Dust off your white shoes or bare your toes in a cute pair of sandals.  Visit your loved ones at the cemetery.  Open up the pool and get out the lounge chairs.  Throw a Frisbee.  Plant flowers.  Watch a parade.  Order a soft-serve cone at the Dairy Freeze.  Sweat.  Get a sunburn.  Brew some sun tea in a huge glass jar.  Fire up the grill.  Have a yard
sale.  Shop at other people’s yard sales.  Or my favorites:  blow soap bubbles just for fun or watch the hubby skip stones at the lake.  Then go home, hide out in the air conditioning, and write poems about it.

THE WAY IT GOES

A flat piece of slate
Skips across the lake
…five, six, seven, eight!
The ripples grow faint
As it wends its way
Through undulating waves
Carried gently by fate
To its deep blue grave
