One of the high points of my life was receiving a reply to my letter to the Car Talk Guys. It was published in the Dayton Daily News, allowing anyone who could identify me (how many Joans could there be with a 1966 VW Bus?) to have a laugh at my expense.

That was hilarious.
Those guys seem to love callers with VW busses. I had a friend who had a VW, and like Harley owners, he was good at working on it because he often had to work on it.
I once saw a VW bus with a bumper sticker that read “I am flooring it!” That was hilarious.

That’s fantastic that you got a reply. I love the line, “the thing most likely to affect the longevity of this car is a brisk wind and an oncoming UPS truck.” I’ll bet you do have some trouble steering after a big truck goes by.

It’s been undergoing renovation for the past few years. We’re hoping to have it back by fall, and the furniture kit installed before next year’s shows (if COVID dies down and they have them). When we start driving it again, I’ll let you know how it handles. If memory serves, we could go 60 mph if we floored it.

Not all antique cars, just old VW Busses. We’ve had a 1971 Kombi, a 1984 Vanagon, and now a 1966 Sundial Camper. 🙂

Thanks! I am a big fan of the Car Talk guys. I keep a copy of this letter in my “special” box, the same trunk that holds my pets’ ashes, the velvet box from my engagement ring, a blue ribbon from an art show, the doll my grandmother made for me when I was 5, the card everyone in my unit signed when I left the Air Force. It’s THAT kind of special. 🙂

Well, if you’ve ever heard their show, you know how these two carry on. I enjoyed all of it but liked the conclusion best, about doing 35 in the breakdown lane. Been there, done that. 🙂

My husband wants a VW bus but the only ones he has found for sale are either non-functional (DIY) or vintage restored for a bajillion dollars… I loved Car Talk!

Everyone with good sense loves Car Talk. My third WP post was dedicated to them! (https://justjoan42.wordpress.com/2015/10/04/a-plug-for-public-radio/) We found our 1966 camper van on a site called theSamba.com. It ran, but was in pretty shabby shape otherwise. We’ve had it for 13 years, fixing it up little by little. There is a VW Bus enthusiasts group in our area called LEAKOIL (Lake Erie Area Kombi Owner’s Involvement League) that hosts shows, outings, camping trips, etc. VW Bus memorabilia is to me what geocaching is to you. I have magnets, a birdhouse, a Lego set, Matchbox models, t-shirts, puzzles, Christmas wrap, you name it.

What a claim to fame! We found two kittens and named them Click and Clack after the tappet brothers, but we couldn’t remember which was Click and which was Clack. So we renamed them Gray Kitty and Other Gray Kitty. One was, you guessed it, gray and the Other, as we called him, was grey; so it was easy to tell them apart.

That’s exactly how I felt! You named your kittens after Click and Clack? Wow! I went to visit a friend’s farm years ago and found out, in a most disturbing way, that he and his wife were Republicans. There were red election signs all over their yard, another sign warned that the house was “guarded by Smith & Wesson,” and they had named their kittens Mitt and Romney. We parted ways after that. Had he named them Click and Clack, we might still be friends. 🙂
