“Sweets are gonna kill you,” my doctor is fond of saying. Thanks to my friend Darlene, I will go to my next appointment armed with proof to the contrary. Darlene and her husband had enlisted their son’s help to move stuff from their old house to their new one. The son stopped on the way over and impulse-bought a fresh strawberry pie, the berries swimming in sugary red goo, smothered beneath a blanket of whipped cream. They trucked load after load to the new house. It was late, but Darlene wanted to go back and stay the night; she had to meet with a potential buyer early the next morning. Her son talked her out of it by tempting her with the pie, which looked too yummy to resist. Midway through dessert, their cell phones began buzzing with warnings from the National Weather Service. Had it not been for that strawberry pie, Darlene would have been caught in the eye of the storm.
OWED TO STRAWBERRY PIE
(diminished hexaverse)
They had spent all day
moving heavy loads
from old house to new.
She wanted to go back
but her son stopped her.
“What about the
strawberry pie?”
he said. “Let’s sit
and have a piece.”
While they ate
and talked, a
tornado
flattened
their old
house.

Wow! I knew Sweets were good for you!! 🙂
So glad your friends were okay, but so sorry about their house.

Thanks, JR. My friends had been doing a “slow move” from the city to the country. They were doing the big/heavy stuff that day because their son was there to help. They hauled away their last load at 10:30 pm. The tornado hit shortly after 11:00. Darlene says if there hadn’t been strawberry pie, she would have gone back. Her son had that impulse for a reason. 🙂

Oh my goodness — how fortunate they were to have spent the day moving! I hope they didn’t lose much of anything!

I know, right? Serendipity every step of the way.

Yikes!! Is the poem true or did you add that last bit as poetic license?? If their old place was flattened – It was a very lucky pie moment. And that they had moved all their things to the new place a stroke of very good luck! And yes that pie is a life saver! (I’d tell the doctor that if he keeps insisting that sweets will kill you, that you’ll let Santa know to skip his house!!)

Their old home was fatally damaged, Muri, though I could not swear it was “flattened.” Had Darlene been inside when the tornado hit, it’s likely she would have been injured or killed. I’m so sick of sugars and fats and everything delicious getting a bad rap. Pie saves lives, I have proof. 🙂

Nice little rhyme, PB! That pie made sure they were in the right place at the right time. Sometimes giving in to temptation is the prudent thing to do. 🙂

This poem leaves me hungry for strawberry pancakes. But pie would do just fine, also. I hope your friend had insurance.

They did have insurance, Tippy, but have discovered it doesn’t cover some things, like removal of a giant tree that was ripped out of the ground roots and all. The allowance for rebuilding probably won’t cover the job. It wasn’t in the most desirable area so maybe they should consider this Nature’s way of “selling” it for them and cutting out the realtor’s commission. Just demolish it, have the debris hauled away, and put the leftover insurance money toward the new house. 🙂

Sounds like a good idea. And they might get a few extra bucks selling the empty lot.

I thought for a moment you had been reading too much of Bruce Goodman’s Weave a Web.

I don’t know that book, Judy, and I couldn’t find it on Amazon. What’s it about? Tornadoes? Close calls? Pie? Help me out here. 🙂

Depriving a human being the joy of pie sounds like it ought to be a deadly sin in its own right. Hopefully your friend’s personal experience will more than convince your doctor that pie is not only not deadly, but has been known to actually save lives! So take that, doc! 😛
