This poem combines just two of Muri’s prompts; it’s the best I can do considering what’s left.
2. Write a poem about the changing seasons
7. Write a Quatern
The following piece hums happily along as winter turns to spring. It is
a “non-traditional” quatern—a few of the syllables are missing and the line that moves through the stanzas is close but not identical. I have added internal rhymes just for fun. What can I say? Creativity doesn’t always stay within the lines.
APRIL ALL ABUZZ
Humming, humming, earth is humming
Soft vibrations wake creation
Dormant grass shoots up en masse
Greening blades in countless shades
Keen homeowners start their motors
Humming, humming, engines humming
Mowers growling, tillers plowing
Jostling beds of sleepyheads
Bulbs awaken, breaking open
From each womb, a brilliant bloom
Humming, humming, flowers humming
Pistils, stamens, sweet libations
Bold prospectors seeking nectar
smell perfume and zoom, zoom, zoom
from their hives in overdrive
Humming, humming, life is humming

I feel some Spring Fever coming on, after reading this. It’s very accurate, as this time of year the weeds keep everyone busy, and the nice weather makes the outdoors irresistible.

Me, too, Tippy. The weather has been perfect for having the windows open, high 60’s and breezy. I literally hear the neighborhood humming. I’m typically more of a houseplant, an indoorsman, but even I can’t resist appreciating the tulips and daffodils, hanging out a load or two of laundry, throwing a tennis ball or Frisbee for the dogs. 🙂

I like it! Especially the part where you break the rules and rationalize it by calling it “non-traditional”. I’m gonna try that at work.”It was a non-traditional expenditure of company funds.”

Poets are kind of notorious for breaking rules. Who else is perfectly happy with Chinese take-out for Thanksgiving dinner? As for creative expenditures at work, spin it any way you want. If Trump can get away with everything he has, I think you’re entitled to spend a few extra company bucks on a nicer stapler or an upgrade on your room at Comfort Inn. Go for it. 🙂

Took a walk early this morning. Love this time of year and this poem fits perfectly, life “hums” with spring in the air! 😉

Thanks, JR. I take a walk every day, the dogs won’t have it any other way. Spring’s hum is something you feel as much as hear, a harmonic vibration tuned to your inner self. 🙂

Ah. This is lovely! I am especially impressed with the internal rhymes – you make my poetry look like leftovers!

Thanks, Muri. The roving refrain started out as “humming, humming, humming, humming.” The little variations made it less monotonous. A few of the internal rhymes were organic, and I thought, hey, maybe I could do that with every line. Your poetry is well-written and beautiful! Leftovers, my a**. FYI: at my house, there are no leftovers; instead, we have “deja food.” 🙂

Sorry I couldn’t satisfy all four remaining prompts with one poem, it just wasn’t logistically possible. I do love the humming of spring. 🙂

Thanks, Quirky. In my world, spring hums, summer sweats, autumn rustles, and winter sleeps. I love the unfurling of spring but autumn is my hands-down favorite. 🙂

I love autumn, too! The tree with all their color-changing leaves is incredibly stunning and majestic…
