SUMMER IN A BIG MASON JAR

Summer is officially here.  And I officially cannot wait for autumn to arrive.  Some people love it when it’s 90 degrees, but not me.  I wilt.  I have zero fondness for sweating, dehydration, heat exhaustion or blinding unsuspecting paramedics with the glare off my shockingly white legs.  Three things make this sweltering season worthwhile:

1.  line-dried laundry

2.  ripe, homegrown tomatoes

3.  SUN TEA
(Monotetra)

With summer rays, I disagree
Their scorching personalities
are fraught with wild intensity
Indoors I flee, indoors I flee

But leave a jar of water first
with four sachets of tea submersed
their amber secrets to disperse
For these I thirst, for these I thirst

No boiling kettle can entice
like long, slow sun served over ice
and wrapped around a lemon slice
Pure paradise, pure paradise

Although I dread winter even more, I have similar misgivings about summer. Your fine poem expresses exactly my sentiment and is as cool and refreshing as the drink, Joan.

Thanks, Peter. There is nothing like sun tea on ice to beat the heat. 🙂

I don’t like tea, but that poem leaves me feeling thirsty for a glass of it.

    Stay cool.

Trying, Tippy. I’m a coffee person at heart. I only drink tea in summer, sun brewed and iced. 🙂

I burn after 15 minutes in direct sun (with 100 SPF sunscreen on). I was once asked how I could stand to wear socks with sandals – I wasn’t. It was just my white bare feet! I love this poem. It sounds like it need to be a song….

Love it, Murisopsis, the “socks” and sandals. I was so indoorsy as a child that my mom called me a “houseplant.” 🙂

Joan, I love sun tea, and who can top a long, slow sun served over ice? I must be insane because I love summer. It’s over 100 in my part of Texas most of the season, not uncommon to reach the 100s in May. It’s a season of semi-freedom for me, although this summer, not so much. I love a summer evening, the moon, the smell of jasmine and honeysuckle and the remaining flowers that have not yet burnt up, LOL.

Hey Lana! I think all teachers love summer best. I can’t abide 100 degree temps, I would melt. Sorry it’s taken so long to reply, I’ve been out of town for a funeral, my dad passed away unexpectedly. Talk soon. 🙂

Thanks, Lana. I expect you understand this tumult of feelings very well. I may take a blogging break for a few weeks. 🙂

Nothing cooler than ice tea. Course, down here in the south, it’s sweet tea, I mean with sugar, not NutraSweet. Still tastes great, though.

Thanks, Tim. Southern style is a tad too sweet for me, but a little sugar is OK. NEVER NutraSweet. And the sugar must be added when the tea is still warm. Good to see you posting again, it’s been a while. 🙂

I used to love suntea! And can I add two more to your list of nice things about summer? Sleeping in and porch swings.

Duly noted, 227. I thought I would do a lot of sleeping in (in all seasons) as a retired person, but it didn’t work out that way. I haven’t used an alarm clock in four years and I’m awake by 7 every day. I have an Amish double tree swing that is perfect location-wise, always in the shade! Sun tea has a certain je ne sais quoi, a flavor that cannot be duplicated with any sort of kitchen appliance. Enjoy your vacation months, September comes too quickly. 🙂
