LIFE: JUST ONE DAMNED PROCESS AFTER ANOTHER

Last year, I was working through a list of poetry prompts.  One of them was “A Process.”  I liked the word itself, with its varied pronunciations and meanings, its ability to function as a noun or a verb, the way it was changed by the addition of a prefix or a suffix and how it captured the whole of life as well as its many individual parts:

LIFE’S NEVER-ENDING PROCESS

Surviving the birth process
Processing language
Processed American cheese
grilled into sandwiches
Film processed into photos
Falling in love and
processing down the aisle
in a gown of ivory lace
Enduring the hiring process
Inprocessing a new job
Learning that my chosen field
follows its own process
Flow charts of our processes,
processed and reprocessed,
Process Improvement
the subject of every meeting
Queues to process
The mortgage process
Endless forms to be processed
Computers processing data
I don’t want processed
selling my information,
a global marketing process
A legal process once or twice
Outprocessing my job,
a daunting process
The retirement process,
and the adjustment process
Processing to the next phase,
a procession of words
in my brain just waiting to be
processed into poetry
A blissful, procreative process
so resolutely unsystematic,
it might not be a process at all
Pure unprocessed freedom
in such an overprocessed world
is, admittedly, a lot to process

Yes, that pure unprocessed freedom can require an adjustment process. I still dream about work, so I don’t think I’m quite through adjusting to retirement. But reading your poem was an enjoyable process for my lazy Sunday morning.

Thanks, Tippy. I never dreamed about work after retirement… consciously and subconsciously, I ran and never looked back, I guess. Glad you enjoyed my poetic process. I’m about to settle into my Sunday process: coffee, peruse the New York Times, chat a while with my fellow bloggers. 🙂

You played with the word ‘process’ as a child would play with lego blocks. A very creative process, indeed, Joan!

Exactly, Peter. What a fun word, trying it this way and that, dressing it up and down, exploring its glorious variety. Speaking of Legos, hubby bought me the wiring harness for the lights in my little VW Bus; maybe I’ll install it. Have a happy Sunday! 🙂

I love how you practice and process through the various poetic forms, Joan. Good job. We surely do live in an over-processed world. I guess if I had to categorize my own attempts at poetry, I would sum it up as wild and fleet of foot. If I try to organize and push it through in any manner, it seems to disintegrate. Have a super week ahead!

Thanks, Lana. This one is just free verse, based on a word from a prompt. “Process” has many negative connotations for me. Today’s world wants to see everything as a process, they try to fit us into a box and assume we all experience everything and make our decisions the same way. Life can’t (and shouldn’t) be boiled down to bare algorithms and flowcharts, it removes all the fleet of foot wildness. 🙂 This is a recurring theme in my poetry, like this paradoxical syllabic piece based on the Fibonacci sequence: https://justjoan42.wordpress.com/2017/01/29/all-of-lifes-a-fib-or-is-it/. I too have experienced much poetic disintegration as a result of pushing and bending and shaping. My Word files are full of false starts, but it’s worth it when a piece comes together. Have a great week. Eat Kiwis! And blueberries! 🙂

Sometimes those false starts return and flesh out. It is definitely worth it when it all comes together. I remember the Fibonacci, that is a great one! Kiwis are definitely on the menu, I saw a whole pack of them at the market yesterday. They seem to be eyeing the strawberries next to them, LOL. Blueberries for sure! I’m setting my feet toward the wildness this instant. I hope your week is going well also! 😀

Thanks, Lana. I was able to bring two false starts to fruition this week, and a whole poem popped out of my pen this morning. Muses speak if and when it suits them, I guess. Your comment about wildness brought to mind a Mary Oliver quote; she says poetry comes from the “wild, silky part of ourselves.” Sounds like quite a fruit salad going on in your grocery cart! Those fuzzy kiwis are like Velcro. I bought an avocado yesterday, and two mangoes, little ones called “Atulfos.” They quickly turn orange and sweet and ripe, heavenly with yogurt. 🙂

Woohoo, good news indeed, Joan. I wish the Muse would speak to me. I keep waiting. And waiting. And waiting. “Atulfos,” you say, sounds like you have some wonderful exotic market, and I’m stuck in a Texas Walmart. But at least I have Aunt Agnes, she makes the ordinary experiences a bit better 😀
