DON’T SAY I DIDN’T WARN YOU!

Independence Day!  Woo hoo!  A paid day off for picnics, parades, and fireworks to celebrate our freedom.  Well, the scraps of it we haven’t traded away in the name of our “safety and security.”  Big Brother’s presence seems kind of comforting, right?  That’s exactly how he gets his foot in the door.  Remember, if he’s looking out for you, he must also have his eye on you.  You and everyone else.  Watch enough cop shows and you will learn what’s possible; they don’t just make all that stuff up, you know.  You could dismiss this whole post, write me off as
a crackpot conspiracy theorist.  It’s your prerogative.  But as they say, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you.

THE EYE IN THE SKY

The spy next door that peeks
around her curtain night and day
is not just “being neighborly.”
More likely, CIA.

You know that crackling static
while you wait for the dial tone?
It could be someone listening in,
a wire tap on your phone.

The camera on your monitor
that transmits while you Skype
sees every keystroke that you make,
each password that you type.

Cells and hard drives can’t delete
your comms or browsing history.
The back-up files are always there;
just how remains a mystery.

Tabs are kept on bank accounts
with each transaction logged.
Credit cards know where you shop
and stay alert for fraud.

The black box hiding in your car
stores constant data readings.
It knows if you don’t buckle up
and how fast you were speeding.

ATMs and traffic cams
have facial recognition.
The GPS inside your phone
can ping without permission.

We’re slowly being poisoned
by Big Pharma and Big Ag,
your death marked “undetermined”
as they zip the body bag.

My buddies say I’m paranoid,
and are they right?  You betcha.
These days you gotta watch your back;
this world is out to getcha.

You’re right. But for the most part, he’s like a vampire–he can’t come into your house unless you invite him in. 🙂

Isn’t that the irony? As you celebrate Independence day and the more we think we have won our freedom, the more we are captured by an enemy that we can’t see and will never set us free. Even the captors are held captive by greed, technology, power and…. A great poem Joan!

Technology is a double-edged sword. We are sold on the advantages without realizing how it could later be used against us. Did you ever fry your computer and somehow, an IT tech was able to recover your documents, emails, contacts? Whew, right? But I’d think twice about donating my old cell phone! Already, we have tracking chips in cars, cell phones, pets… how long before we start chipping people? Don’t laugh, they’re already talking about doing it to parolees and dementia patients. Recently, a friend submitted his DNA (using his real name and info) for fun, to find out about his ethnic background and genealogy. It’s safe, millions of people do it, he said. Do you have any idea of the implications of that? It’s not just about matching DNA from crime scenes. What if you’re 25% Arabic and society moves toward ethnic cleansing? What if you carry a genetic disease and the government decides you shouldn’t have kids, just in case? A lot of things happening today seemed impossible or ludicrous twenty or ten or even five years ago. Technology is a mixed blessing, a “frenemy.” 🙂

Ah Joan I can see this is a serious issue for you and yes, technology is a double edged sword. I think the development of biometrics can also have the same consequences. Based on some of the implications you’ve raised, we need some ethical principles to underpin the use if technology and I wonder if the horse has not bolted too far.😀

Very funny. And I love the astronomical photo that goes with this little ditty. Government officials always seem like they’re a little bored. I think now I know why. They’ve been watching my every move.

LOL, Tippy! They do seem rather bored, now that I think of it, all sorting through the evidence of our mundane little lives. I’m picturing some official in a non-descript van, wearing headphones, listening to my 3-hour phone conversations with my sister and muttering to himself, “Nothing useful here, all they do is reminisce and giggle.” The photo just proves my point about there being an Eye in the Sky. This week’s form is called “Conspiracy Rhyme” by the way.

Well, you conspired to create a great rhyme, in my view.

Thanks, Joyce. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” So I guess America is still dealing with the same problems from 200 years ago. Common sense is superior to technology or legislation any day of the week; it’s too bad so few people have it. 🙂

The lady next door, behind the curtain, living in a house bought and paid for by an unknown company out of Langley, Virginia? I found it sketchy when it and 3-4 other houses were erected around 2001 at the entrances and egresses of our liberal, outspoken village.

And I will. PS: might be best not to make comments like that… whoever does the monitoring will surely make a note of what an easy target you are. Just kidding. Or not. 🙂

It’s absolutely true. Neither you nor the Conspiracy theorists are paranoid. Big pharma and big agriculture are the two big evils – all pervasive and devastating … Threat to Life on earth is looming large. What you have drawn in your write up is a striking sign of death throws of the last man and an upside down sign post showing the pathway to collective death and end of the world.

Gosh, I’m glad someone is on my side! Between tainted food and harmful drugs, they’re killing us all slowly. So slowly that few make the connection. Thanks to the monitoring of all our communications, if you do figure it out and try to warn others, you might find yourself a laughingstock, or locked up in a mental institution, or swimming with the fishes. Money does indeed make the world go ’round. Bigwigs will stop at nothing to increase their profits. 🙂

A timely warning and wake-up call not just for America, but for the entire world! Using poetry makes it a powerful vehicle to get the message across.Greetings from Canada!

Thanks, Peter. The poem started out as kind of a joke, but as my hubby would say, at the heart of all jokes is the truth. If you can get people to loosen up and laugh, you can get them to listen. You’re right, we need to think more critically about the dangers and downsides of things before we accept them into our lives. 🙂

Joan, I agree. In fact, I just finished a book called The Circle, which is kind of a modern-day 1984. The “scary” part, if you will, is the book shows how WE basically give permission (via social media, etc.) for the government to be 100% involved in our lives.

Thanks, KE. I think we are unwittingly tricked into giving our “permission” when new technologies tout their benefits without warning us of potential drawbacks. We might use technology more carefully if we understood the risks, for instance, if we knew cell phones could cause brain cancer, we wouldn’t gab on them 24/7, we would just use them for emergencies. Thanks for the book recommendation, I plan to check it out. 🙂

Oh isn’t that the truth, Joan? I was just thinking of that 80s song the other day, “Somebody’s Watching Me…” I think it’s by Rockwell. I love the line about how the back-up files always stay around and how that is -is a mystery. Good one indeed!

Thanks, Lana. I recall that song, also “Eye in the Sky” by Alan Parsons Project. I’m a sucker for police and crime shows, everything from Chicago PD to NCIS to Elementary, and it always amazes me how they can hack computers and dump “deleted” files, triangulate a cell phone or search facial images from hidden cameras to find out where a person was (or is), sit in unmarked vans and eavesdrop on private conversations, tap into the perp’s bank account and follow the money, etc. Must be hard to be on the lam; the reach of technology is intimidating even to law-abiding citizens! Technology has its advantages, but I think we need to know the downsides, too, so we can exercise caution in where, when, why, how, and how much we use it. 🙂

I hadn’t realized before that this is an issue for you. Somehow I assumed all bloggers took these things in stride – even we “hobby bloggers” have secret fantasies about being “discovered.” Someone noticing us. Meanwhile we cling to our supposed anonymity and the fact that the majority of people we really know aren’t interested in reading our words, so why should the government be?

Since I have always seen the internet as the opposite of private, anything I put on here has to be stuff that anyone and everyone can know. I figure that if someone hacked my computer, the worst thing that could happen is that he/she learns some English.

On the other hand, there are weird intrusive things – ads suddenly appearing about the very thing you googled yesterday. I am sure you know what I mean. I now believe that it is not about privacy or security – it is about money.

What we can all be assured of is that EVERYONE wants to sell us something.

THAT is the primary motivator of all surveillance if you ask me.

    I’m not buying.

” Today i choose to be happy; to feel all the things that i didn’t feel the day before. I will surely thank the universe for the gift of another day, I will entice the universe with yet another reason to give one more day’ Your poem Joan, kinda reinforces a persistent feeling that’ve always had; that someone’s watching every single move that I make….It compels me to make his time worthwhile! LOL..
