This week on JustJoan42, we welcome our old friend, the LIMERICK.
A limerick is a five-line form with a waltzing beat that often involves bawdy humor. The first, second, and fifth lines contain seven to ten syllables, rhyme with each other, and conform to the same rhythmic pattern. The third and fourth lines are shorter, rhyme with each other, and have the same rhythm. Perhaps the most famous one begins this way: “There once was a man from Nantucket…” Google it if you’re unfamiliar. WARNING: this poem is political. Believers in alternative facts may wish to put their fingers in their ears and hum until it’s over.
OPEN LETTER TO THE SENATE
I’m sure Bernie didn’t envision
his campaign would end in recision
His bump from the race
left us in a bad place:
Trump or Clinton, a dismal decision
I held out until the last minute
amid warnings Donald might win it
The odds seemed remote
but I cast my blue vote
To be honest, my heart wasn’t in it
I paled as Ohio turned red,
fighting panic as westward it spread
I threw up a prayer
for the country’s welfare
and uneasily tossed in my bed
I woke the next morning unrested
Seems popular vote had been bested
Why do we acknowledge
the electoral college?
Red’s so-called win hotly contested
Despite opposition’s outrage,
the U.S. became Donald’s stage
Teamed up with Bannon,
another loose cannon,
he’s gone on a reckless rampage
His cronies warm cabinet seats
Detractors are out on the streets
He pokes other nations
and threatens relations
with his inappropriate Tweets
Senators, please take a stand
and impeach this tyrannical man!
Before it’s too late,
pry our nuclear fate
from the grasp of his miniscule hands

I still can’t believed it happened! Maybe it is a GOOD time to jump ship!

Like some kind of nightmare, from which you cannot awaken? Like, maybe it’s just an “Alternative Presidency” because you accidentally took the red pill instead of the blue pill? Jumping ship appeals to me on some level, but 1) I can’t swim and 2) someone has to stand their ground and fight, right? Anyway, where would you go? 🙂

Excellent on the Limerick Joan – a form I think well suited to your subject. Good for you on raising your voice. It’s one step forward for Mankind 😀

Thanks, Chevvy. Poetry has been a haven for me in the current political climate–if the Muses want to sing about politics, so be it. Being able to laugh at the absurdity cuts my bitterness by half (which leaves a lot, but still…) Have a lovely day. My first crocuses popped up yesterday! 🙂

Yes, we need some escape otherwise we will implode. It’s scary how politics is going everywhere. Hence, do enjoy the crocuses. 😀

Great limerick Joan! I laughed out loud at some of those lines.

Glad it made you smile and LOL, T Wayne. A little levity helps in even the worst of situations. And music. God, what would we do without music? 🙂

Thanks, Marissa. Another is coming… this week’s assignment is to write lyrics (right up your alley!) and I’m doing a ballad about “Alternative Facts” which will be posted here soon. Give my best to the CheeseBergens. 🙂

Excellent Joan! I love the rhythm of limericks. You certainly expressed my sentiments 😀

Thanks, Lana. I love Limericks, too. The rhythm and syllables are hard to explain on paper–I couldn’t write one based off what I read in Wikipedia–but once you hear a few and get that waltzy rhythm down, it’s unforgettable. Glad my sentiments matched yours… if not, you could put your fingers in your ears and hum? I hope my right-wing followers read these and realize just how ridiculous the situation sounds to the rest of us. 🙂

Lordy~ I nearly wet myself laughing! And then I had to stifle sobs. I’m impressed with your command of the limerick (which makes me itch when I have to write one) and I have to agree with your blue hue!

I do NOT want to see a repeat of this in 2020. Hillary supposedly had it in the bag in 2016, which probably kept lukewarm blue voters from turning out. I don’t care surveys show Biden ahead by 30 points, EVERY BLUE VOTER NEEDS TO GET OFF THEIR ASS AND CAST A BALLOT. We need to win by so wide a margin that no amount of cheaty-cheating can threaten it. 🙂
